COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Sophomore
Zoe Kulkarni won a three-setter at fifth singles, but the Maryland women's tennis team was bested by No. 48 Princeton, 4-3, on Saturday.
Kulkarni's win was her fourth on the season, tying her for the most on Maryland's roster. It was her first win of the season at the fifth singles spot, with the previously three coming at the sixth position.
Maryland got off to a strong start in doubles play, taking the opening point of the match. Following a Princeton forfeit at the third doubles spot, Maryland's top tandem of
Eva Alexandrova and
Millie Stretton earned a 6-4 win to clinch the lead for Maryland.
The Terrapins then took a two-point advantage following a Princeton forfeit at the sixth singles spot. However, the Tigers responded well, winning a trio of matches at fourth, third and second singles to take their first lead of the day.
Princeton's win at second singles came in three sets, as Clare McKee knocked off Maryland's Stretton, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. Kulkarni's win then knotted the two sides up again, but Princeton prevailed at first singles to clinch the match victory.
The deciding match at first singles was the third three-setter of the day, as Princeton's Stephanie Schrage edged Maryland's Alexandrova, 7-6(7), 5-7, 6-2.
