SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Junior Kaila Charles of the No. 9-ranked Maryland women's basketball team is one of five finalists for the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame's Cheryl Miller Award, an honor for the nation's top small forward.
Joining Charles as finalists are Bridget Carleton (Iowa St.), Sophie Cunningham (Missouri), Jackie Young (Notre Dame) and Satou Sabally (Oregon).
A national committee of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 student-athletes in October, which was narrowed to 10 candidates in February and now just five finalists. This month, five finalists will be presented to Ms. Miller and the Hall of Fame's selection committee. The winner of the 2019 Cheryl Miller Small Forward of the Year Award will be determined by a combination of fan votes and input from the Basketball Hall of Fame's selection committee. Fans are encouraged to visit www.HoophallAwards.com to cast their votes March 15-29.
Charles led the Terrapins to their fourth Big Ten regular season title in five years. For the second straight season, she led Maryland, and was No. 4 in the Big Ten, in scoring with 16.9 points per game.
Charles was one of just two players in the league unanimously voted to the All-Big Ten First Team and she earned four Big Ten weekly honors this season in helping the Terrapins to an overall record of 28-4 and 15-3 in league play.
She is also No. 8 in the Big Ten in field goal percentage (.489) and top 15 in the league in rebounds (211).
This past weekend, Charles averaged 26.3 points and 8.3 rebounds in the Terps' three-game run to the Big Ten championship game. In the final, she scored a career-high 36 points with nine boards and was voted to the All-Big Ten Tournament Team.
The winner of the 2019 Cheryl Miller Small Forward Award will be revealed during the WBCA Coaches' All-America/Naismith Starting 5 Presentation on Thursday, April 4, at the Women's Final Four in Tampa, Fla.
Next, the Terrapins will learn their NCAA Tournament seed and region during the Selection Monday special on March 18 at 7 p.m. on ESPN.
