ROSEMONT, Ill. -- Freshman Taylor Mikesell was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week after a pair of road wins for the No. 8 Maryland women's basketball team over Purdue and Illinois this week.
This is the second Big Ten Freshman Player of the Week honor for Mikesell this season, after previously notching the honor after another pair of road victories over Ohio State and Indiana earlier in the year.
In two road wins this week, Mikesell averaged 15 points, scoring 20 in the Terps home finale against Illinois on Saturday. In the Big Ten Championship clinching win over Purdue on Monday, Mikesell had 10 points, five rebounds and three assists, shooting 50-percent from the field. On Saturday's senior day win against Illinois, Mikesell led Maryland in scoring with 20 points, hitting four three pointers and eight foul shots, a career-high.
She has scored in double figures in 24 of 28 games this year and is playing more minutes than any rookie in the Big Ten. Mikesell has broken the Maryland freshman three point record and leads all freshman in the country with 86.
Next, the Terrapins will head to the Big Ten Tournament in Indianapolis as the No. 1 seed and face the winner of No. 8 Northwestern and No. 9 Michigan State on Friday afternoon on noon. The entire tournament will air on the Big Ten Network.
