COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland gymnastics team travels to Athens, Ga. To compete in the NCAA Athens Regional, hosted by the University of Georgia on Friday, April 5 at 7 p.m.
Maryland, with a Regional qualifying score of 195.840, will compete against No. 1 Oklahoma (RQS 198.115), No. 8 Georgia (RQS 197.315), No. 9 Kentucky (RQS 197.085), No, 16 California (RQS 196.625), Missouri (RQS 196.385), Iowa St. (RQS 196.080) and the highest scoring team from the first round (New Hampshire/NC State).
The Terps will compete in the second session with Oklahoma, California and either NC State or New Hampshire. The top two teams from each session will advance to compete on Saturday, April 6 at 7 p.m.
Maryland will start the meet on floor followed by vault, bars and beam.
"This is the reason they came here," said head coach Brett Nelligan. "They committed to come to Maryland to build something and they're doing it. They are seeing their hard work and efforts pay off because the program is rising, and the program can't rise without its athletes."
The Terrapins enter regionals ranked No. 28 in the nation, their best pre-regional ranking in program history. They enter Friday's meet as an unseeded team and aim to upset the nations' best Oklahoma and No. 16 California for a chance to advance to Saturday.
