Terps Drop Saturday Contest With Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Minnesota (23-24, 12-8 Big Ten) took down the Maryland baseball team, 9-3, at Siebert Field Saturday night.

What to Know

  • The Golden Gophers scored four runs in the first and never trailed from there in a game that only became close when the Terps made it 5-3 after seven and a half innings.
  • Those four runs in the first came on five singles and were helped along by a Caleb Walls fly ball drop in left field.
  • Maryland starter Zach Thompson rebounded following the four-run first and a solo job from Eli Wilson for Minnesota in the second to toss five consecutive zeros to end his outing. The redshirt sophomore finished his day allowing three earned runs in seven innings pitched with four strikeouts and one walk.
  • Maxwell Costes hit his team leading tenth homer to lead-off the second, a solo shot. From there, Maryland's offensive was quiet.
  • Until the eighth, where the Terps rallied to cut the deficit to 5-3. Caleb Walls doubled and then scored on Randy Bednar single before Taylor Wright singled as well. Costes then slapped single through the left side to plate Bednar.
  • The comeback would fall short as Minnesota scored four in the bottom half of the eighth to put the game away.

Other Stuff

  • Maxwell Costes was hit by a pitch and has not been plunked a Big Ten high 18 times.
