Maryland Signs Transfer Mimi Collins

COLLEGE PARK, Md.  – Head coach Brenda Frese and the Big Ten champion Maryland women's basketball team signed forward Mimi Collins from Tennessee Tuesday. Collins, a native of Waldorf, Md., will transfer to the Terrapins with three years of eligibility remaining.

In her one season at Tennessee, Collins played in all 32 games, started in four and averaged 5.5 points and 3.4 rebounds. The 6-3 forward shot 51 percent from the floor and scored her career-high 14 points in the Lady Vols' NCAA First Round game vs. UCLA. Started the final four games of the season, averaging 9.0 points and 2.3 rebounds in those contests. She earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors as well.

"We've known Mimi and her family for a while," Frese said. "I'm glad she's coming back home. She had a solid freshman year in college, in which she showed she's a versatile forward that will be able to stretch the floor. We are excited about her competitiveness, work ethic and will to win. She already knows a lot of our players and she's a great fit into our Maryland family."

"I wanted to come to Maryland because I wanted to stay home and play with great people," Collins said. "I just thought it was the right fit and I'm so excited. I can't wait to be there and be coached by great people too."

Collins played at Paul VI Catholic High School and helped lead her team to a 30-4 record, a VISAA state title and a top-five ranking in the USA TODAY high school poll. She averaged 17.6 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks as a senior.

She was named a McDonald's All-American, played in the Jordan Brand Classic and was named the VISAA Division I Player of the Year in 2018. Collins was named a Naismith All-American and a Player of the Year Top-Five finalist.

She earned VISAA Division I All-State First Team honors twice, Washington Post All-Met First Team as a senior and honorable mention honors in 2017.
