COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Junior Hope Lewandoski tallied her first goal of the season in a critical moment, netting the game-winner for Maryland (2-0-0) in double overtime against NJIT (0-1-1) on Sunday. The OT victory caps a two-win opening weekend for the Terps, after a 2-1 win over Georgia Southern on Thursday night.
After the Terps couldn't convert on several chances in OT, Lewandoski finally broke through in the 104th minute off a cross from Loren Sefcik. Sefick played the ball in from the left wing, finding Lewandoski in the middle of the box between two defenders for the eventual game-winner. Â
Maryland had the upper hand offensively for the majority of the game, outshooting the Highlanders 24-5 including a 6-0 edge in overtime. Â
In the first half, the Terps sustained pressure on the goalie taking a total of 10 shots. The Highlanders could not answer and remained without a shot until the opening minutes of the second half. NJIT goalkeeper Molly Saylor was able to stop three Terrapin shots and she made three saves in the first half.
Maryland managed six corners on the day, but couldn't generate a clean look off the set piece as the NJIT defense packed the box. Â
With the game still tied, Alyssa Poarch generated a solid chance for the go ahead score as the minutes winded down. With 1:30 left in regulation, Poarch made a close shot that missed slightly wide left of the goal.
Both teams remained scoreless in the first overtime period, although Maryland had several near chances to end the game. The Terps kept attacking at the start of the second period of OT, before Lewandoski buried the game-winner.
NJIT came into the game looking for their first regular season win after a scoreless draw with UMBC on Thursday night.
Maryland is back in action next weekend for two games at the Bulldog Classic hosted by the University of Georgia. Terps will first face Auburn on Friday, August 30 at 4:30 p.m. before taking on host Georgia on Sunday, September 1, at noon.
