COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The University of Maryland Athletic Department is excited to announce "Terps 10,000," a new campaign to increase membership in the Terrapin Club to 10,000 members.
The Terrapin Club's new Terps 10,000 website will showcase state-by-state and overall goals for the campaign, for University of Maryland alumni across the country.
Individuals who join the Terrapin Club for as low as $55 during the campaign will receive a Maryland Terrapin Club flag to proudly fly at your home, office, or at your tailgate. All current Terrapin Club members are eligible to receive a flag by donating an additional $55 to the Terrapin Club. Click HERE to plant your flag.
"Maryland Athletics is dedicated to honoring the educational and athletic legacy of generations of outstanding student-athletes," said Athletics Director, Damon Evans. "You can invest today in the success of over 500 current Maryland student-athletes by joining the Terrapin Club, ensuring an undeniable impact on their ability to succeed in the classroom, in competition and in the community. We hope you will plant your flag in support of our student-athletes today."
Currently, the University of Maryland's Terrapin Club membership ranks among the bottom third in the Big Ten. Michigan, Penn State, Nebraska, Iowa, Michigan State and Minnesota have over 10,000 members in their respective athletic funds.
In the past five years, the cost of providing scholarships for Maryland's student-athletes has risen from $11 million to over $14 million for 2019-20, and will continue to grow as scholarship costs increase and the cost of higher education grows.
Funding student-athlete scholarships is one of the many ways the Terrapin Club carries out its mission. Currently, a scholarship for one University of Maryland student-athlete comes in at $34,198 per year.
"The financial support we receive from Terrapin Club members helps our student-athletes succeed both academically and competitively," Senior Associate Athletics Director Cheryl Harrison said. "The philanthropic support from this campaign goes solely toward student-athlete scholarships and is vital in reaching the goal of fully funding our scholarship bill."
Fully funding the scholarship bill with donations is a significant and critically important part of the long-term sustainability of the Maryland Athletics program. Reaching 10,000 Terrapin Club members will not only enrich the lives and help fund the scholarships of the 500+ student-athletes on campus, but it will also allow the athletic department to reallocate resources directly to its individual teams so they can continue to compete at the highest level.
