A Historic Opener: Top Notes from Terps Win over Howard

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Maryland opened up the Michael Locksley era with a record-breaking performance, culminating with a 79-0 win over Howard. Here are some of the most impressive team and individual notes from the Week One win.

Points, points, and more points...

  • Maryland's 79 points were the second-most in program history, only one point away form the record set in an 80-0 win over Washington College in 1927.
  • The 79 points are tied for the fifth-most by a FBS team in a game since 2013.
  • Maryland scored 56 points in the first half, the most ever in a single half in program history.
  • They are also the most in the first half by any Big Ten team since Penn State scored 56 on Illinois on October 23, 2005.
  • Maryland started off strong, scoring 28 points in the first quarter: the most in the opening quarter since the Terps also had 28 on October 5, 2002 at West Virginia.

What a debut for Josh Jackson...

  • In his first game as a Terp after transferring from Virginia Tech, Josh Jackson impressed: throwing for 245 yards and four touchdowns.
  • Jackson's four touchdowns were all thrown in the first half, making him the first Maryland quarterback to throw for four touchdowns in the first half since at least 1977.
  • He is also the first Maryland quarterback to throw for four touchdowns in a game since Caleb Rowe against South Florida on September 19, 2015.
  • Jackson tied Mark Manges (vs. Villanova, 1975) for the most touchdowns ever thrown in a Maryland debut.

Crabcakes and Season Opening Wins...

  • Yesterday's win gave Maryland its 10th consecutive season-opening win. It is the fifth-longest streak in power-five football, trailing only Ohio State, Alabama, Utah and Michigan State. Maryland and Alabama are the only two among the group to beat two ranked teams during the streak (Maryland def. No. 23 Texas, 2017 & 2018).
  • It was Maryland's sixth-straight opener scoring at least 30 points. It has scored at least 40 points in five of those six games.

Defense STRONG...

  • The win was Maryland's first shutout since defeating West Virginia, 37-0, in 2013.
  • Maryland held the Howard offense to just 68 yards of offense, the least amount given up since at least 1977.
  • The Terps had eight sacks as a team, led by 1.5 by LB Keandre Jones, the most Maryland has had in a game since October 5, 2002 against West Virginia.
  • Howard had just one rushing yard, the lowest total by a Maryland opponent since at least 1977.

Take it away...

  • Maryland won the turnover battle against Howard, forcing a fumble that was recovered by DL Tyler Baylor, extending its streak of games with a takeaway to 13.
  • The 13 games in a row with a takeaway is the fifth longest streak in the FBS, trailing only Indiana, Houston, Mississippi State and next weeks opponent: Syracuse.

Quick Hitters...

  • WR Dontay Demus Jr. is the first Maryland wide receiver to have two first half receiving touchdowns since DJ Moore on October 14, 2017 against Northwestern and the first receiver to have 100 receiving yards since Moore against Penn State on November 25, 2017.
  • WR Sean Nelson caught a touchdown on his first reception of his career, the first Terp to do that since WR Jeshaun Jones last year vs. Texas (9/1/18).
  • WR DJ Turner returned a punt 40 yards to the house in the second quarter, the first Terrapin punt return touchdown since Teldrick Morgan (83 yards) vs. Rutgers on November 26, 2016.
