PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Redshirt sophomore Alyssa Poarch and junior Hope Lewandoski both scored in the first half to upset No. 20 Rutgers on the road Saturday night. This was the first road victory over a ranked opponent since 2014. After last year's senior day upset win over Northwestern, the Terps now have back-to-back years with a victory over a ranked opponent.
Maryland had a slow start to the half, while Rutgers had the majority time of possession. Poarch brought the momentum after having a great shot attempt in the 21st minute despite having to maneuver by four Rutgers defenders. Poarch returned quickly on the attack and scored in the 23rd minute.
Lewandoski kept the Terps hot after a goal in the 35th minute off of a free kick. The goal was assisted by Adalee Broadbent and Poarch.
New Jersey native Erin Seppi totaled 5 saves to limit Rutgers to one score. Seppi had a huge save in the 50th minute after Rutgers' had a great shot attempt. Soon after in the 59th minute, Seppi dove across the goal and pushed a ball out for another crucial save.
Rutgers attempted to erase the early deficit, but the Maryland defense remained strong to bring the Terps on top 2-1.
The Terrapins will return to action on Thursday, October 3 when the team travels to Columbus to face Ohio State.
Notes:
