SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Maryland women's basketball freshman Angel Reese is one of 20 of the top small forwards in the nation named to the Cheryl Miller Award Watch List by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the WBCA Wednesday.
Named after the three-time Naismith Player of the Year and Class of 1995 Hall of Famer, the annual award in its fourth year recognizes the top small forwards in women's NCAA Division I college basketball. A national committee of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates.
Reese, a Baltimore native, is the No. 2 player in the country and top-ranked wing in this freshman class, according to ESPN. She is highest-ranked incoming recruit in program history. Reese was named a McDonald's All-American and averaged 18 points, 20 rebounds and five assists per game for her career. She was named Player of the Year by The Baltimore Sun after her junior and senior seasons and was also named to the USA Today First Team.
She led her Saint Frances team to three straight IAAM championships and two conference titles. Reese was named to the Jersey Mike's Naismith High School Trophy Girls Watch List. She played for Team Takeover, which won EYBL National Championship.
College basketball fans are encouraged to participate in Fan Voting presented by Dell Technologies in each of the three rounds. In early February, the watch list of 20 players for the 2021 Cheryl Miller Award will be narrowed to just 10. In early March, five finalists will be presented to Ms. Miller and the Hall of Fame's selection committee.
The winner of the 2021 Cheryl Miller Small Forward Award will be presented on Friday, April 9, 2021, along with the other four members of the Women's Starting Five.
