Terps Set Program Record in Win Over Towson, 112-78

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- No. 14 Maryland rolled to a 112-78 win over in-state opponent Towson Thursday night in the Terrapins' home opener at the XFINITY Center. The Terps (3-1) made a Big Ten-record 21 three pointers in the contest, with sophomores Ashley Owusu and Diamond Miller both setting career highs.

Miller led the way with career-high 28 points and nine rebounds. Owusu scored 25 points with seven boards. Senior Katie Benzan hit six threes for 21 points. Sophomore Faith Masonius scored 11 points with nine boards off the bench.

The Terrapins made 21 of 31 three pointers (67 percent), including nine of 12 in the fourth quarter.

"I thought we picked up where we left off against Arkansas offensively," head coach Brenda Frese said. "I thought we were in a great rhythm on the offensive end and started really, really strong in the first quarter. But, as you can see, we're still working through the lapses on the defensive end, bringing that together as a team. Towson has some really talented guard play and made us pay on the defensive end.

"A lot of great things for us, when you talk about Ashley and Diamond's career highs and setting a program and Big Ten record for threes. In my time here, to see a team go 21-for-31 is pretty special to be able to watch. I thought that fourth quarter was some of our best basketball."

Maryland jumped out to a 28-8 lead, led by nine points from Benzan and eight from Miller in the opening minutes. The Terrapins made eight of first 10 shots and led 30-14 at the end of the first quarter.

Owusu went 3-for-4 from the field in the second quarter, including a turnaround jumper at the buzzer just before half. The Terrapins led 55-30 at intermission.

Towson (2-1) came out of the break and cut the Terps' lead to 19 with 2:38 left in the period. The Tigers' Kionna Jeter scored 20 points in the third quarter off 8-for-13 shooting from the field.

Two free throws by Towson's Aleah Nelson cut the Terrapins' lead to 13 at 80-67 with 8:00 to play. Maryland fired back with a 13-1 run, led off by five straight points from Miller.

The Terrapins went 9-for-12 from outside the arc in the fourth quarter.

Towson's Jeter scored 28 points and Nelson added 18.

Maryland has won 22 straight home openers and 47 of their 50 home opening games.

Maryland will host Mount St. Mary's Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the XFINITY Center. The Terps-Mountaineers game will be streamed online through Big Ten Network + here. Fans can watch with the Big Ten Network + subscriptions.

The season will begin with no fans in attendance at XFINITY Center out of an abundance of caution for the health and safety of our student-athletes and fans. Maryland athletics is hopeful that some fans will be welcomed to XFINITY Center as the season progresses and health conditions permit.

As a result, Maryland is proud to announce a new initiative called the Maryland Basketball Virtual Sellout, which will give fans the opportunity to purchase a seat, row, section or courtside seat at XFINITY Center while providing exclusive commemorative items and access. The goal is to sell all 17,950 seats at XFINITY Center.

Virtual ticket options range from $10 to $1,000. There is also an option to purchase the opportunity to have "XFINITY Center To Yourself" for $17,950 and watch an away basketball game this season with up to 10 friends and/or family members. If interested in purchasing the XFINITY Center to Yourself package, please contact the Terrapin Ticket Office at 301-314-7070 or 800-IM-A-TERP.
