Charles, Owusu Sweep Big Ten Weekly Honors

ROSEMONT, Ill.  –  Senior Kaila Charles and freshman Ashley Owusu of No. 10 Maryland swept the Big Ten weekly individual honors Monday. Charles was named Big Ten Player of the Week for the second time this season and earned her 12th career weekly honor. Owusu earned her third Big Ten Freshman of the Week award.
 
Owusu led the Terrapins (20-4, 11-2 B1G) in scoring with 18.3 points per game, with Charles right behind her at 18.0 in the the Terps' three wins this week. Owusu averaged 7.3 assists with 2.0 turnovers, while going 14-for-17 from the free throw line. She shot over 52 percent from the field (19-36) and 3-for-5 from outside the arc.
 
Owusu scored a career-high 22 points in the Terps' game vs. Michigan State Monday. She went 9-13 from the field and a perfect 2-for-2 from outside the arc, with six boards and eight assists in the Terps' dominant win.
 
At No. 18 Indiana Thursday, the Terps trailed by six at the half. Owusu scored 15 of her 19 points in the second half to lead Maryland to the win. She scored the go-ahead three-point play in the third quarter and the Terrapins never looked back. Owusu scored 14 points with nine assists and just one turnover vs. Rutgers Sunday.
 
Charles averaged 18.0 points, 7.3 boards and shot 72 percent from the field over the three victories. In a rout of Michigan State, Charles scored 17 points, including 11 straight to put the Terps up 10 at the end of the first quarter.
 
At No. 18 Indiana Thursday, Charles led the way with 21 points and 11 boards and four assists. She scored six points in the Terps' dominant third quarter to take the lead back. She hit a jumper with 3:57 to play to put the Terps up 68-61 with 3:57 to go and the Hoosiers never got closer.
 
Charles scored a game-high 16 points off 7-for-10 shooting from the field vs. Rutgers Sunday and grabbed a game-high eight boards. Charles scored eight of the Terps' first 14 points en route to the rout.
 
The Terps have won nine straight games, dating back to Jan. 12. Maryland reached the 20-win mark for the 16th straight season Sunday.
 
Next, the Terrapins will host No. 17 Iowa (20-4, 11-2) Thursday at 6 p.m.
 
Thursday's game is Kaila Charles bobblehead night, when 400 lucky fans will win a Kaila Charles bobblehead.
