Three Terps Place at Mat Town Open

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. -- Michael North and Jonathan Spadafora earned runner-up finishes and Kevin Makosy placed fourth in the Terps' final open competition of the season Sunday at the Mat Town Open.

Maryland heads to Piscataway, N.J. on March 7 to compete in the Big Ten Championships, before traveling to Minneapolis for the National Tournament on March 19. For full results from the Mat Town Open, see below.
What to Know
- Spadafora placed for the fourth time this season, going 3-1 on the afternoon and finishing second at 165 pounds. The freshman got to the 20-win mark with his third win of the day, and now leads the team in total wins. Spadafora pinned the first two opponents he faced before earning a 5-2 decision to advance to the title bout where he would drop a 16-1 tech. fall and finish second.
- North placed for the third time this season and finished in second place for the second time. North had previously taken second at the F&M Open. The Wadsworth, Ohio native earned a 15-7 major decision and a 17-0 technical fall en route to the championship bout, where he would drop a 7-2 decision to Virginia's Denton Spencer.
- Makosy placed for the second time this season, going 2-2 on the afternoon to earn fourth place at 197 pounds. The Ijamsville, Md. native opened up his day with a pin, then dropped into consolation and earned a 3-2 decision to advance to the third-place bout. Makosy then dropped a tight 2-1 decision to secure fourth place.
- Garrett Fisk also had an impressive day on the mat, fighting his way through consolation after dropping his first match of the day. The Severn, Md. native used a major decision and a pin to get to the consolation round of four, where he would drop a 3-2 decision to Matt Lee. (Yup, that Lee family...)
- Maryland officially closes out the 2019-20 regular season. In all, Maryland competed in 19 duals (finishing 2-17), the American Round Robin, the Black Knight Invite, and six open tournaments.
