ATLANTA – Maryland women's basketball assistant coach Karen Blair was named the Division I Assistant Coach of the Year by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Thursday.
Blair joined head coach Brenda Frese's staff in the spring of 2018 and is also the program's recruiting coordinator. In her two seasons at Maryland, Blair has helped the Terps earn a record of 56-9 (.875) and win the 2019 and 2020 Big Ten regular season titles and the 2020 Big Ten Tournament title.
"Karen works day in and day out to make our program the best. She is tirelessly working, making recruiting calls, helping to keep our staff organized," Frese said. "Karen coaches our guards and she makes them a priority. She brings the energy, the knowledge and is the best at what she does. She is one of the hardest-working assistants I have ever had on staff."
Blair helped the Terrapins put the finishing touches on the No. 3 recruiting class of 2019, which included McDonald's All Americans Ashley Owusu and Diamond Miller. In 2019, she helped the Terps sign Angel Reese, the No. 2 overall recruit in the class of 2020 and the highest-ranked recruit in program history.
Blair coached at Virginia Commonwealth for three seasons before coming to College Park. Blair helped the Rams sign a top 30 recruiting class and the top class in the Atlantic 10. Over her time in Richmond, the Rams made a WNIT appearance and recorded the second-most wins in school history with 23.
Prior to her time at VCU, Blair served as an assistant and interim head coach at UT Arlington, and an assistant at Colgate, North Texas, and her alma mater, Southern Methodist.
Maryland has won 17 straight games since Jan. 12. The Terrapins have 14 wins over RPI top 50 teams and seven over teams ranked in the AP Top 25.
