ROSEMONT, Ill. – Six Terrapins earned All-Big Ten honors Monday, as voted by the league's head coaches and media panel.
Ashley Owusu was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year and
Kaila Charles was a unanimous All-Big Ten First Team selection for the second straight season.

Shakira Austin earned All-Big Ten Second Team honors from both groups. Owusu was named to the Second Team by the media and earned honorable mention honors from the head coaches. She was also named to the five-player All-Freshman Team.

Blair Watson was named to the five-player All-Big Ten Defensive Team and earned All-Big Ten honorable mention honors. Sophomore
Taylor Mikesell earned honorable mention honors from both groups as well. Jones also earned a Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.

The Terps' six honorees are the most-ever All-Conference honorees for Maryland (25-4) in a single season.

Owusu is the second straight Big Ten Freshman of the Year for Maryland, after Mikesell earned the honor last season. She averaged 11.6 points and her 5.2 assists per game were third in the league. She is the No. 2 freshman in the country in assists with 150 on the year.

Brenda Frese have won conference Freshman of the Year honors, including Mikesell, Alyssa Thomas (ACC), Marissa Coleman (ACC) and Crystal Langhorne (ACC).

Charles led the Big Ten champion Terrapins in scoring with 15.0 points and in rebounding with 7.6 boards per game. Charles has started in all 132 career games and currently has 1,963 career points, which is No. 6 on Maryland's all-time scoring list. She also has 917 career rebounds and 256 assists.

Charles finished the regular season No. 8 in the league in scoring and in rebounding, No. 3 in field goal percentage (.508), No. 10 in steals (1.7) and No. 3 in offensive boards (3.7). She was also named Big Ten Player of the Week twice in conference play.

Jones put up 11.1 points and 5.6 boards per game this season. Earlier this year, she reached 1,000 career points and currently has 1,261 in her career with 658 rebounds. Jones is third in the Maryland record books with her career field goal percentage of .596. In the last six games, Jones averaged 15.5 points with 7.5 boards and shot 74 percent from the floor.

Jones was named Big Ten Player of the Week on Feb. 17 and was named to the Player of the Week Honor Roll on March 2. Last season, Jones earned Second Team honors from the media and honorable mention from the coaches.

Austin is second on the squad in scoring (12.1 points) and in rebounding (6.7 boards this season. She's nabbed 51 steals and 35 blocks. Last month, Austin reached 500 career rebounds.

In the Terps' last six games, all dominant wins, Austin has averaged 15.0 points with 7.3 boards per game. Last year, Austin was named to the All-Freshman Team and earned Honorable Mention honors from the coaches.

This is Watson's first career Big Ten honor. Watson led the Terrapins' stifling defense with 2.9 steals per game. Her 82 steals this season are the most by a Terrapin since Renneika Razor had 87 in 2002-03. The Terps are No. 3 in the NCAA in steals per game with 13.0 steals per game.

Watson also averaged 8.0 points, 4.3 rebounds 2.0 assists this season. Her 190 career three-pointers made are No. 3 in the Maryland record books.

Mikesell put up 11.0 points with 2.5 assists and 2.5 boards in her sophomore campaign. She shot 43.2 percent from outside the arc (79-183), which is No. 2 in the Big Ten and No. 19 in the country.

Last season, Mikesell made 95 threes, more than any player in Maryland history. She earned All-Freshman Team honors, First Team honors from the media and Second Team honors from the coaches.
Maryland will be the No. 1 seed for this weekend's Big Ten Tournament and will face the winner of Purdue and Michigan State Friday at noon in the Quarterfinals in Indianapolis. For more on the Big Ten Tournament, clickÂ
