COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Senior Tiara Wright and freshman Reese McClure have been named second team All-Big Ten selections as announced by the conference offices today. Freshman Emma Silberman was also named the team's sportsmanship honoree.
Wright earns the honor after an outstanding senior season headlined by her twice earned 9.950 bars routine, the best score in the history of Maryland gymnastics. This is Wright's first-ever nomination to an All-Big Ten team. The Wilmington, Del., native posted career bests in three events this season, bars (9.950), beam (9.850) and floor (9.925). Wright helped lead the Terrapins to the No. 8 spot after week one of competition and continued to set the standard in the remainder of the 2020 season.
"I'm so proud of Tiara and all the hard work she has put into her time here at Maryland," said head coach Brett Nelligan. "She came into this season with such great focus and intensity and was having her best season ever. This honor is well deserved and an incredible way to cap off a phenomenal career."
McClure earned the honor in her first season of competition where she led off on two events and gave her team consistent scores in all three of her events. McClure earned career-highs on vault (9.900), beam (9.850), and three times on floor (9.900).
"Reese came in and instantly caught fire. To earn this honor as a freshman is incredible and I can't wait to see what she can accomplish over the next three years here at Maryland," said Nelligan.
Silberman also was honored as the team's recipient of the Sportsmanship Award given to a student-athlete who demonstrates positive sportsmanship and ethical behavior.
"Emma works tirelessly every single day, always giving 110% to everything she does. What's more impressive is that she does it with a smile on her face. She is a joy to coach, and I am thrilled for her to receive this honor," said Nelligan.
