#7 Terrapins to Host Spartans Thursday

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The seventh ranked Maryland women's basketball team (11-2, 7-1 B1G) will host Michigan State (9-2, 4-2) Thursday at 4 p.m. at the XFINITY Center. The schools moved their Feb. 10 matchup to Thursday. The Terps-Spartans matchup will be televised on the Big Ten Network. Fans can also watch at FoxSports.com and the Fox Sports app, using their cable login information.

  • Maryland fell just short at No. 14 Ohio State, 88-86, Monday night in Columbus. Sophomore Ashley Owusu went 10-12 from the foul line and led the Terps with 33 points, 20 in the second half, with 9 assists and 6 boards. Katie Benzan went 7-for-12 from outside the arc for 11 points. Maryland led by 5 at 67-62 with 7:34 remaining. Down the stretch, the Terps missed 12 of their final 13 shots to come up short.
  • The Terrapins are averaging 92.0 points per game through 13 games, which is leading the country. The NCAA Division I scoring record is 96.7 points per game by Providence in 1991. Maryland's team scoring record was 89.6 points per game by the 1977-78 team. No other team in program history averaged over 90 points per game.

  • The University of Maryland women's basketball program will celebrate its 50th varsity season in 2020-21, and will honor the program's rich tradition and history throughout the year. Maryland played its first full varsity season in 1971-72, under the leadership of pioneer Dottie McKnight. During its storied history, the program has won 1,040 games, amassed 43 winning seasons, won 22 conference championships, made 37 postseason appearances and captured the 2006 National Championship

  • Head coach Brenda Frese is in her 19th season in College Park. She's led the Terrapins to a record of 497-130 (.793), 12 conference titles, 15 NCAA Tournament appearances in 17 postseasons, three Final Fours, six Elite Eights, six Sweet Sixteens and the 2006 NCAA Championship. 
  • Frese is closing in on 500 wins at Maryland. With win No. 500, she will become the winningest coach in Maryland basketball history. Hall of Fame women's basketball head coach Chris Weller won 499 games in her 27 seasons (1975-02).

  • Maryland is one of the most consistent winning programs in the country. The Terrapins have been ranked in 204 straight Associated Press polls, dating back to the preseason poll of the 2010-11 season. That mark is behind just Baylor (329 weeks) and Connecticut (519 weeks).
  •  Maryland has been ranked for 255 weeks in the last 17 seasons, with 196 of those weeks in the AP top 10 and 89 in the AP top 5.
