ANN ARBOR, MI -- Maryland field hockey rallied from a 2-0 deficit but ultimately fell in the national semifinals to Liberty, 3-2, in double overtime. Maryland finishes the season with a 15-7 record after advancing to its 20th Final Four.
Charlotte Vaanhold scored the game-winner for the Flames with 1:27 remaining in the second overtime. The Flames (20-2) advanced to the National Championship game for the first time in program history.
After falling down 2-0,
Bibi Donraadt knocked home a goal with 13 seconds left in the third quarter to bring the Terps within a goal. After a penalty stroke was called against Liberty, freshman
Hope Rose calmly stepped up and tied the game at two apiece with 4:54 left in regulation.
Maryland outshot Liberty 31-16 for the entire game, but Flames goalie Iirigoyen Iritxity saved nine shots that came her way.
Noelle Frost made seven saves for the Terps.
Forward Jill Bolton scored her 19th goal of the season for the Flames to give Liberty the 1-0 lead early in the third quarter. Liberty added their second on a goal from Charlotte Vaanhold.

Breaking Down The Action
- The team's battled to a scoreless draw after the first quarter, with Liberty earning three penalty corners compared to one for Maryland. Both goalies made one save in the first frame.
- Frost made a crucial save with 6:08 remaining in the first half after a Liberty attacker leaked behind the Terps' defense. Three consecutive shots from Maryland off of a penalty corner were all saved by Flames goalie Iirigoyen Iritxity. The Terps had a total of six shots in the second quarter alone as the teams entered the half still scoreless.
- Jill Bolton opened the scoring in the third quarter with a goal in the 34th minute of play to put Liberty up 1-0. Another Flames goal made it 2-0, but Margot Lawn and Emma DeBerdine provided enough pressure on the Flames backline which caused the ball to ricochet high into the air where only Donraadt could reach it and put it in the net.
- The Terps pushed hard for the tying goal and were rewarded with Rose's penalty stroke goal with just under five minutes remaining.
- In overtime, Maryland played one player up as Liberty was given a green card, but the Terps couldn't capitalize on it. Frost came up huge with two huge saves with 2:30 remaining in the first overtime period.
- Maryland killed off two green card penalties of their own in the second overtime frame, but Vaanhold's second goal of the game sealed the game for Liberty.
