NASSAU, BAHAMAS -- The No. 2 Maryland women's basketball team fell to No. 5 NC State by a score of 78-60 in the opening game of the Baha Mar Pink Flamingo Hoops Championship Thursday. The undermanned Terps (6-1) fell behind early and suffered their first defeat of the season.
Angel Reese led the Terps in both scoring and rebounding with a career-high 24 points to go along with nine boards. Ashley Owusu tallied 14 points and dished out five assists. Freshman Shyanne Sellers scored 12 points as she knocked down two three-pointers.
After trailing early in the game, Maryland won the final two quarters, 33-29.
NC State was led by Elissa Cunane's 20 points and moved to (5-1) on the season
Brenda Frese's Take
"I love how we competed in the second half. To outscore such a great team like NC State, 33-29 in the second half, I was really pleased with that. Obviously, I thought the first half, they punched first. They were very, very aggressive. I think it put us on our heels. There's no question how good NC State is. They're just such a deep team. For us to come in here without five players, two that are starters for us, I love the fact, given what we didn't have, just the fight we had in the second half. But we talked about it. It takes a 40-minute game. If we would have played like we did in the second half, it would have been a much more competitive game. But all the credit goes to NC State. They poured it on for 40 minutes. You need to be able to have that kind of depth to be able to compete with the depth and the talent that NC State has."
