Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Reese's Career Night Leads No. 8 Terps Past Miami, 82-74

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- The No. 8 Maryland women's basketball team snapped its two-game losing skid with an 82-74 win over the Miami Hurricanes in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge Thursday night at the XFINITY Center.

The Terps (7-2) trailed 60-59 entering the final 10 minutes, but used a big fourth quarter surge led by Angel Reese's career-high in points (26) and (15) rebounds.

With Maryland up by one with 1:40 remaining, Reese's free throw hit the front iron but a timely tip out by Mimi Collins found Katie Benzan for a three-pointer to put the Terps up by five with 1:37 left in the game. The Terps would end the game hitting their last five shots.

Angel Reese recorded her fifth double of the season and the sixth of her career with a monster night. She scored eight of her 26 points and grabbed five of her 15 boards in the Terps' fourth quarter push.

Ashley Owusu poured in 22 points of her own and went 12-for-14 at the foul line to go along with three assists.

The Terps dominated on the boards, outrebounding Miami 48-22

Miami (4-3) was led by Kelsey Marshall's 24 points.

Brenda Frese's Take

"Just a tremendous battle. I thought we showed a lot of grit and resiliency there in the fourth quarter. We knew what to expect. These battles that we've had in the past with Miami, we knew they were going to come in here really well-coached. I thought they gave us fits for the first three quarters and I think you can see we're still kind of working through getting Katie and Faith back, and our continuity isn't quite there yet, but credit [Angel Reese and Ashley Owusu]. Angel with the monster game, career-high in points and rebounds and we needed every single one of them. Ashley's our floor general and took command in the second half. They had no answer for her getting to the free throw line 14 times and stepping up the way she did. Thirty-four free throw attempts, on the glass, the rebounding difference, and then the fourth quarter to just have one turnover. I thought that was the difference. We just kind of tightened things up. We guarded and we executed in the fourth quarter when we needed to."

Breaking Down The Action
  • After the Hurricanes got off to a strong start, the Maryland defense buckled down and withheld Miami without a field goal for over a three-minute stretch. Despite the strong defense and five points from Chloe Bibby, the Terps found themselves trailing 18-17 after the first quarter.
  • The Terps quickly took the lead after a Mimi Collins layup 49 seconds into the second quarter and the team's offense stayed red hot. The team used an 11-3 run to take a 28-21 lead, but Miami stormed back after hitting four shots in a row to take a 36-35 lead with 57 seconds remaining, and the Terps would add a free throw to enter the break tied at 36.
  • Owusu scored a quick six points in the third quarter, allowing Maryland to take a 47-45 lead with 5:31 remaining. The Hurricanes would once again respond, taking a 53-51 lead after two free throws from Lashae Dwyer. Owusu would promptly tie the game with two free throws of her own. A late basket by Faith Masonius cut the Miami lead to 60-59 heading into the fourth quarter.
  • The teams went back-and-forth in the fourth quarter with neither side able to build a sizable lead. The aforementioned 7-0 sparked the Terps and got the XFINITY Center crowd back into the game, but a Miami three cut the lead to 71-70 with 2:35 remaining. The three-pointer by Benzan with 1:37 remaining proved to be the dagger as Maryland's defense would lock in and secure the win.

Double Figure Update
  • Reese (26 points) has scored in double-figures in eight games this season and now has 16 career games in double-figures.
  • Owusu (22 points) scored in double-figures for the 57th time in her career, including all nine games this season.
