COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Sophomore Ashley Owusu of the eighth-ranked Maryland women's basketball team was named one of five finalists for the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award Tuesday. The annual award in its fourth year recognizes the top shooting guard in women's NCAA Division I college basketball.
The five finalists for the 2021 Ann Meyers Drysdale Award are Chelsea Dungee (Arkansas), Dana Evans (Louisville), Ashley Owusu (Maryland), Arella Guirantes (Rutgers) and Zia Cooke (South Carolina).
Owusu is the leading scorer and top distributor on the nation's No. 1 scoring team. She is averaging 18.9 points and 6.0 assists to lead the Terrapins, who are putting up 91.7 points per game to lead the country.
Owusu is second in the Big Ten in assists, fourth in scoring, sixth in field goal percentage (.492), ninth in assist turnover ratio (2.3) and No. 11 in free throw percentage (.780).
After the Terrapins lost all five starters from last year's Big Ten championship squad, Owusu has helped lead them back to the top of the Big Ten standings, a record of 19-2 and a top-10 ranking for the last eight weeks.
A national committee of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 student-athletes in November, which was narrowed to 10 candidates in February and now just five finalists. This month, the finalists will be presented to Ms. Meyers Drysdale and the Hall of Fame's selection committee. The winner of the 2021 Ann Meyers Drysdale Shooting Guard of the Year Award will be determined by a combination of fan votes and input from the Basketball Hall of Fame's selection committee. Naismith Starting Five Fan Voting presented by Dell Technologies will go live on Friday, March 5 on hoophallawards.com.
Maryland will play at No. 12 Michigan (13-3, 8-3) Thursday at 12 p.m. ET at the Crisler Center. Thursday's game will be televised on the Big Ten Network. Fans can also watch on the Fox Sports app or FoxSports.com, using their cable login information.
