Maryland Rolls Past The Mount in NCAA First Round

SAN ANTONIO, Texas –  The second-seeded Maryland women's basketball team opened the NCAA Tournament with a 98-45 victory over Mount St. Mary's in the First Round Monday afternoon at the Alamodome.
 
The Terps (25-2) went 25-for-30 at the free throw line (83.3 percent) as a team to help pull away from the Mountaineers (17-7). Maryland earned its biggest win in the NCAA Tournament in program history.
 
Five Terrapins scored in double figures. Ashley Owusu led Maryland with 22 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Diamond Miller added 19 points and Chloe Bibby scored 11 points with 11 boards. Mimi Collins scored 12 points and Angel Reese scored 11 off the bench.
 
The Terrapins went 12-for-13 at the free throw line in the first quarter to build a 28-18 lead the end of the period. Miller led both teams with nine points in the first quarter.
 
After a quick Mountaineers bucket to start the second, Maryland rattled off 18 straight points to take a 46-20 lead. Owusu scored eight points and Miller added six in the stretch.
 
Maryland led 53-22 at the half after holding Mount St. Mary's to just four points in the second quarter.
 
Reese added eight points, six at the foul line, as Maryland extended its lead to 75-33 at the end of the third quarter.
 
No player reached double figures for Mount St. Mary's, which was in its third NCAA Tournament after back-to-back appearances in 1994 and '95. Michaela Harrison, Aryna Taylor and Bridget Birkhead each scored eight for the Northeast Conference champions.
 
Maryland shot 52.3 percent from the field for the game.
 
Mount St. Mary's went 8 of 36 from 3-point range, 7 of 25 inside the arc, shooting 24.6% overall while being outrebounded by 18, outscored at the foul line by 18 and having 20 turnovers, twice as many as the Terrapins.
 
The Terrapins, who are the No. 2 seed in the Hemisfair Region, will face No. 7-seeded Alabama (17-9) Wednesday in the NCAA Second Round. Game time, location and television information will be released later Monday evening.
