
Terps Suffer 64-61 Loss In Sweet 16

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- No. 2 seed Maryland saw its 2020-21 season come to stunning end on Sunday night with a 64-61 loss to No. 6 seed Texas in the NCAA Tournament's Sweet 16. The Longhorns scored seven consecutive points to rally from a 59-57 deficit in the final 1:32 of regulation to secure the victory. Kyra Lambert's fast-break layup off a steal with 45 seconds left put the Longhorns ahead for good at 61-59. The Longhorns (21-9) will make their first Elite Eight since 2016.
The Terps finish the season at 26-3 after capturing the Big Ten Championship and Big Ten Tournament Championship in 2021.
Maryland, which came into the game leading the nation in scoring with a 91.2 points per game average -- and averaging 99 points in its first two NCAA Tournament games -- was held to a season-low 61 points.
Diamond Miller led all scorers with 21 points, she also added eight rebounds. Chloe Bibby netted 14 points and Ashley Owusu had 10 points.
Charli Collier led Texas with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Celeste Taylor also had a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Texas outscored Maryland 39-29 in the second half after the Terps held a 32-25 lead at halftime. The Longhorns held Maryland to 34 percent from the floor in the second half while shooting 52 percent themselves.
The game featured nine lead changes.
