Terps Take Series Finale Over Ohio State, 9-3

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The University of Maryland baseball team took the series finale against Ohio State on Monday, defeating the Buckeyes 9-3 at Bill Davis Stadium.

What You Should Know

  • Maryland's bats came alive in the fourth game of the Terps' first weekend of Big Ten "pod" play.
  • The Terps caused havoc on the base paths, stealing nine bases, its most steals in a game since taking 11 bags vs. Oakland in 2013.
  • Freshman right-hander Jason Savacool got the start and the win for the Terps, moving to an impressive 4-0 mark while giving Maryland five strong innings allowing just three runs.
  • Randy Bednar, who recorded a hit in each game this weekend, continued his pace at the plate. The senior captain went 2-for-5 and drove in a pair of runs. Junior shortstop Benjamin Cowles also kept his remarkable pace alive, going 2-for-3 with two RBI.
  • Maryland got a pair of home runs from Tommy Gardiner and Bobby Zmarzlak.
  • Ohio State opened the scoring in the first inning, grabbing the lead with an early two runs off Savacool.
  • Senior Tommy Gardiner hit just his second career homer in the third to get Maryland on the board.
  • The Buckeyes added to their lead in the bottom half of the third, hammering a solo homer to make it a 3-1 ballgame.
  • Maryland's four-run fifth vaulted the Terps into the lead as Zmarzlak's two-run shot tied the game, and a Bednar two-run single gave Maryland the lead which they would never relinquish.
  • Gardiner drove in a pair of runs in the sixth to extend Maryland's lead, while Ramsey continued to put up zeros against the Buckeyes out of the bullpen. Cowles did more of the same in the seventh, driving in two more runs to make it a 9-3 game.
  • Left-hander Ryan Ramsey was exceptional in relief, cruising through four scoreless innings for his first save of the 2021 season.
