Nkwonta and Coleman win USTFCCCA Awards

NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) has announced Maryland's Angel Nkwonta as the Women's Field Athlete of the Year in the Mid-Atlantic Region and Assistant Coach Travis Coleman as the Women's Assistant Coach of the Year for the Mid-Atlantic Region.

As a senior, Nkwonta set two top Maryland program-records in the weight throw and the shot put. In the shot put, Nkwonta earned a final mark of 17.27m (56'8"). This was a personal-record as well as a Maryland record in the event. She took the silver medal at Big Ten Championships. This mark beats the previous record set by Maryland great Marita Walton in 1982. She is nationally ranked No. 7 in the event.

Nkwonta also earned the best mark in Maryland history (21.36m, 70"1) in the weight throw early in the Indoor season at the Penn State Invitational. This was a personal best and a Maryland record.

At the Indoor Big Ten Championships, Nkwonta was the only thrower to place in the top-5 in both shot put and weight throw events.

Assistant coach Travis Coleman is in his 5th year as an assistant under Andrew Valmon. Since Coleman's arrival Terrapin throwers have rewritten the record books 13 times on the way to seven NCAA first-round appearances, four All Americans, an NCAA runner up, and Maryland's first men's B1G Ten Champion since joining the conference.

Nkwonta qualified for the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships held in Arkansas on March 11-13.
