ANN ARBOR, Mich. – No. 8 Maryland used a dominant first half to win at No. 12 Michigan, 88-63, and pick up its ninth straight victory. With the win, the Terrapins clinched a share of their third straight Big Ten championship and sixth in their seven years since joining the league.
Maryland (20-2, 16-1 B1G) was led by its four sophomores. Ashley Owusu led the way with 22 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists, Diamond Miller added 17 points, 9 rebounds and 2 asssits. Faith Masonius scored 12 points and Mimi Collins poured in 10 points.
The Terrapins forced nine Wolverine turnovers and scored 14 of their 27 first quarter points off those takeaways in the first quarter. The Maryland defense helped the Terps open a 17-point lead at 25-8.
Maryland kept the defensive pressure on in the second quarter, forcing six more Wolverine turnovers. The Terps held Michigan without a field goal over the final 5:00 of the second quarter to lead 46-26 at halftime.
Maryland has won nine straight games, dating back to Jan. 28. Maryland is 108-13 (.893) in league play since joining the Big Ten in 2014. The Terrapins own the all-time series over Michigan, 10-1.Â
