Terps Earn 4-3 Comeback Win Over Northwestern Friday

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Benjamin Cowles' eighth inning go-ahead sac fly proved to be the difference as the Maryland baseball team defeated Northwestern, 4-3, at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium Friday afternoon.

What You Should Know
  • After falling behind 3-0 after two innings, the Terps rallied back to win the opening game of College Park Pod play against Northwestern.
  • The Terps got a tremendous performance from the bullpen trio of Sean Heine, David Falco and Sam Bello, who combined to toss four innings of shutout ball to end the game. Maryland starter Sean Burke allowed three runs over five innings, struck out eight, walked five and scattered three hits.
  • Northwestern plated a pair of runs in the first and one in the second to open up a 3-0 lead. Burke settled down from there, putting up three straight zeroes to end his outing.
  • Maryland got on the board in the fourth. Randy Bednar reached on a walk and advanced on a wild pitch before Maxwell Costes singled up the middle to make it 3-1.
  • Some good fortune helped the Terps tie the game in the seventh. Bobby Zmarzlak and Justin Vought reached on consecutive singles and were on base with two down. Bubba Alleyne's fly ball was then dropped in left field, allowing Zmarzlak and Vought to score.
  • The Terps grabbed the lead in the eighth. Matt Shaw walked and then went first-to-third on a Tucker Flint single. Cowles drove in Shaw with a sac fly to give Maryland a 4-3 lead.
  • Heine gave the Terps a great outing out of the pen after entering to start the sixth. The right-hander when two and two thirds innings and did now allow a run while striking out two. Falco took over for Heine in the eighth and worked the Terps out of a bases loaded jam. Bello earned the save with an easy 1-2-3 ninth.
  • Costes led the offensively Terps with a pair of his and an RBI. Bednar reached twice.
