COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Sophomore Ashley Owusu of the Maryland women's basketball team won the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award as the nation's top shooting guard this week.
The Ann Meyers Drysdale Award is presented by the Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association. The Award is one of five honoring players at their position, known as the Women's Naismith Starting Five. The winners were determined by a combination of input from committees composed of top basketball personnel and over 136,000 votes cast over the course of the season via Starting Five Fan Voting Presented by Dell Technologies.
"I am so honored to win this special award, named after a player like Ann Meyers Drysdale," Owusu said. "I'd like to thank everyone that voted for me. I wouldn't receive any accolades without the help from my teammates, coaches and family. I am just a sophomore, so I can only hope to achieve some of the success Ann Meyers Drysdale had."
Owusu earned unanimous All-Big Ten First Team honors and was named Co-Big Ten Tournament MOP after leading the Terrapins (26-3) to their fifth Big Ten Tournament title.
Owusu earned Third Team All-America honors from the Associated Press and the USBWA. She leads the nation's top offense in scoring (17.9) and assists (5.9). The Terrapins led the country in scoring (90.8) and in assist turnover ratio (1.70).
Owusu topped the record for points averaged by a sophomore in program history (17.8 by Kaila Charles in 2017-18).
Maryland won both the Big Ten regular season and tournament titles this season.
