What You Should Know
- Maryland improves to 16-13 on the season after winning three consecutive games following a loss to Iowa in the pod series opener.
- Chris Alleyne, Matthew Shaw, and Maxwell Costes each had multi-hit days, each notching a pair of base knocks.
- Jason Savacool got the start on the mound and went four and a third innings, allowing six runs (five earned), scattering seven hits, and striking out four.
- Veteran lefty Sean Fisher gave the Terps four and two third innings of relief out of the bullpen, allowing just a single unearned run. Fisher gave up just five base hits, struck out a season-high five batters, and is credited with his first win of the season.
- Shaw continued to rake in the series, going 2-for-5 on the afternoon with an RBI. Shaw improves to 8-for-18 (.444) on the weekend with 6 RBI.
- Alleyne also had a successful day in his usual leadoff spot, going 2-for-4 and improving to 5-for-15 (.333) on the weekend. The senior center fielder also went a perfect 5-for-5 on stolen base attempts in the series, now at a league-leading 18 for the year.
- The Wildcats opened the scoring in the first inning, as an errant throw to first on a dropped third strike allowed a run to score.
- Maryland responded right away in the home half of the first, as Maxwell Costes put the Terps on the board with an RBI single.
- Tommy Gardiner followed Costes' RBI single with one of his own, then another run scored to make it 3-1 as the result of an awarded base after a rule violation on the Northwestern catcher.
- The Wildcats scored one in the second, to which Maryland responded again with a Shaw RBI single which made it 4-2.
- Northwestern tied things up in the fourth with a leadoff homer and an RBI double. Northwestern broke the tie in the fifth, as a RBI single drove home a pair and gave the Wildcats. a 6-4 advantage.
- Bobby Zmarzlak's two-run double in the bottom half of the fifth tied the game again, then a Alleyne RBI single gave the Terps their first lead since the third inning. The Terps kept it coming in the seventh, as Kevin Keister drove in a run on a double-play ball, and a Shaw grounder brought home Tucker Flint.
- Fisher beared down on the Wildcats and secured the win for the Terps, retiring Northwestern in order in the eighth before allowing a single unearned run in the ninth.
- Maryland returns to College Park to host Minnesota for a three-game set at Bob "Turtle" Smith starting on Friday, April 30 at 6:30 p.m. All three games will be streamed live on Big Ten Network Plus and broadcast on the Maryland Baseball Network.
