#13 Terps Open B1G Tournament Against Michigan

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 13 Maryland women's lacrosse team begins postseason play at the Big Ten Tournament this weekend. The Terps will be the No. 2 seed in the tournament and face No. 7 Michigan in the quarterfinals on Thursday, April 29 at 5:00 p.m. at Panzer Stadium on the campus of Penn State. The game will broadcast live on the Big Ten Tournament with Mark Dixon and Rachel DeCecco on the call. 

MICHIGAN STORYLINES

LOCKDOWN LIZZIE
  • The leader of this year's Maryland team, defender Lizzie Colson has had a sensational year for the Terps, solidifying her place as one of the top defenders in the country.
  • Colson is tied for the nation lead in caused turnovers with 37 this season and has 13 more caused turnovers than anyone else in the Big Ten.
  • An Inside Lacrosse First Team Midseason All-American and Tewaaraton Nominee, Colson also leads the Big Ten with 44 groundballs, 11 more than anyone else in the league.
  • Through only 12 games, Colson stands sixth all-time in program history for single season caused turnovers while also ranking sixth all-time in program history with 94 career caused turnovers.
  • A three-time Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, IWLCA National Defensive Player of the Week (3/23) and Inside Lacrosse National Player if the Week  (3/25), Colson is also third in program lore with 299 draw controls. Colson has at least four groundballs in eight-of-12 games this season and at least three caused turnovers in seven-of-12 games.

HISTORIC HANNAH
  • Attacker Hannah Leubecker has starred for Maryland offensively this season, leading the Terps with 44 goals, averaging 3.67 per game, the third-most in the Big Ten and 18th-highest mark in the country.
  • Leubecker set the program record for the most goals through the first eight games of the season with 35 and was tied with all-time leading scorer Megan Whittle for the most goals through the first 10 games of the season with 38.
  • The sophomore has at least two goals in 10-of-12 games this season and at least a hat-trick in seven-of-12 games, with two seven goal games, including one against Michigan (2/26).
  • Leubecker was named the Inside Lacrosse National Player of the Week on March 4.

TOURNEY TIME
  • The Terps have dominated the Big Ten since entering the conference in 2015, standing at 45-7 overall. Maryland won three-straight Big Ten Tournament Championships in 2016-18 and has a 7-2 record overall in five appearances in the tournament, with four-straight Championship game appearances.
  • Overall, including the regular season, Maryland has won eight of the 11 Big Ten Championships (five regular season, three tournament).
  • Maryland has won 14 Conference Tournament Championships in program history, with nine of those coming since Cathy Reese became the head coach in 2007 (six ACC, three Big Ten).
  • The Terps took home six-straight ACC titles from 2009-14 and three-straight B1G titles from 2016-18. Reese is 22-4 as the coach of Maryland in conference tournament games.

SERIES HISTORY
  • Maryland has never lost to Michigan, standing at 7-0 all-time. 
  • The Terps swept Michigan when the two played earlier this season, with Maryland winning both games in College Park, the first game 17-13 and the second game 12-9. 
  • In the first game, Hannah Leubecker scored seven goals as Maryland team broke out offensively to defeat No. 17 Michigan, 17-13. The Terps shot .515 percent in the game led by Leubecker's seven, three from senior Hannah Warther, four points (two goals, two assists) from senior Grace Griffin and two goals apiece from senior Catie May and sophomore Libby May.
  • In the second game, Senior Grace Griffin starred on both ends of the field, leading Maryland with four goals and picking up a career-high five groundballs as the Terps beat No. 17 Michigan for the second time in three days, 12-9. The Terps were led offensively by Griffin and sophomore Hannah Leubecker, who tallied a hat trick to give herself 10 goals on the weekend. Senior Hannah Warther also had three goals.
