Terps Win Friday Series Opener Against Minnesota

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The University of Maryland baseball team won its series opener vs. Minnesota, 12-4, on Friday night at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium in College Park. Nick Dean got the start on the mound and tossed seven innings, earning his second consecutive win. Benjamin Cowles, Tommy Gardiner, and Troy Schreffler Jr. all notched multiple hits, and the Terps improve to 17-13 on the season.

What You Should Know
  • With tonight's win, Maryland concludes the month of April with an 11-4 record. Maryland has won its last four games, and seven of its last eight.
  • Sophomore right-hander Nick Dean earned his first Friday night start of his career, tossing seven innings and allowing just a single earned run, while striking out eight.
  • Dean shut down the Gophers in order in the first before turning it over to the offense, which came out firing. Back-to-back-to-back doubles from Matthew Shaw, Benjamin Cowles, and Maxwell Costes gave the Terps an early 2-0 lead, then a Tucker Flint two-run shot - the first home run of his career - made it 4-0 after just a single inning of play.
  • The Gophers led off the second with a solo home run, but Dean would retire the next three batters he faced in order.
  • Maryland didn't let off the gas in the bottom half of the second, as Cowles cranked a two-run homer to make it 6-1. Cowles' league-leading 13th blast of the season gives the junior shortstop a home run in every weekend series this season.
  • Minnesota picked up a pair of unearned runs on back-to-back RBI singles in the third to make it a three-run game.
  • The Terps took advantage of a couple of freebies in the bottom half of the third, as a bases-loaded HBP from Alleyne drove home Maryland's seventh run, then a Cowles RBI walk made it 8-3.
  • Dean worked himself out of a jam in the fifth, as the Minnesota leadoff man reached on an error, and a misread bunt single put runners on first and second with none down. Dean induced a 6-4-3 double play and got out of the inning unscathed with a flyout to left.
  • Maryland wouldn't score again until scoring three in the sixth, as a Schreffler bases-loaded walk pushed a run across, Flint scored on a wild pitch, and Kevin Keister drove in a run on a grounder to short.
  • Keister drove in his second run of the game in the eighth with a grounder to short in the eighth to make it a 12-3 game. Minnesota grabbed a run in the ninth, but couldn't piece together a rally to force a bottom of the ninth.
