Maryland Concludes Series Sweep of Minnesota

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The University of Maryland baseball team won its sixth-consecutive game on Sunday, taking down Minnesota 6-3, and completing the three-game series sweep of the Gophers. Maryland has now won nine of its last 10, and its six-game winning streak ties the longest Big Ten winning streak in program history.

What You Should Know
  • Maryland turned in a wire-to-wire win in the Sunday series finale, never trailing against Minnesota.
  • The Terps got offensive production out of everyone in the lineup, as eight of the nine Maryland batters recorded base hits and all nine reached base safely.
  • Redshirt sophomore right-hander Sean Burke got the start on the hill, tossing three scoreless frames before giving way to the bullpen. The Sutton, Mass. native struck out a pair and safely navigated his way out of jams with multiple runners in scoring position in both the second and third innings.
  • Logan Ott, David Falco, Ryan Ramsey, Connor Staine, and Sam Bello all made pitching appearances out of the bullpen and combined for six innings of three-run ball.
  • Matthew Shaw, Maxwell Costes, and Tommy Gardiner all notched multiple hits on the afternoon.
  • Justin Vought got the Terps on the scoreboard with a two-run blast well over the scoreboard in left field in the second inning.
  • Maryland would tack on two more runs in the fourth as a Gardiner two-run single extended the Terrapin lead to four.
  • Logan Ott tossed a scoreless fourth before surrendering a pair of homers in the fifth. Falco relieved Ott to limit the damage and worked out of the inning successfully,.
  • In the home half of the sixth, Matt Orlando doubled home Benjamin Cowles with a deep liner to the left-center gap.
  • Falco returned for the sixth where he struck out the first batter he faced, walked the next, then forced a pair of flyouts.
  • Ramsey took the mound for the seventh and worked a clean inning, giving up just a single hit.
  • The Terps loaded the bags in the bottom of the seventh on a pair of walks and a single but were unable to push any runs across.
  • Staine took over to pitch in the eighth, working out of the inning without allowing a run. Staine struck out three - including the last batter with a pair of runners on the bases and the potential go-ahead run at the plate.
  • Maryland exhausted the Gopher bullpen in the eighth, facing three different arms, and getting an insurance run on a Costes RBI single.
  • Head Coach Rob Vaughn went to his closer in the ninth, as Bello retired the side in order to earn his sixth save of the year.
Up Next
  • Maryland hits the road for a three-game swing against Illinois in Champaign next weekend, May 7-9. The Fighting Illini (15-15) are in the middle of a four-game series against Michigan, and have won two of the first three games against the Wolverines.
