View From The Box
  • Maryland (4-5-1) and Missouri State (12-1-0) engaged in a battle befitting of the NCAA Tournament occasion at UNCW Soccer Stadium Sunday afternoon.
  • The Terpa and Bears left all the goal scoring for the final seven minutes, with senior Eric Matzelevich giving the Terps the 1-0 lead with 6:55 remaining in regulation. Missouri State's Jon Koka then scored with 4:30 left to tie it and then 35 seconds left to win it for Missouri State.
  • The first half saw Missouri State on the front foot to start, but the match leveled out after the first 10 minutes. Maryland's back line of Kento Abe, Brett St. Martin, Chris Rindov and Nick Richardson held firm in front of Jamie Lowell in the Maryland goal.
  • The Terps got a spark off the bench from Jacen Russell-Rowe and Paul Bin, both in their return from injury, late in the first half and created a few chances. The match went to the half scoreless.
  • Maryland was the team in the ascendancy to start the second half. The Terps controlled possession and had a few chances to break the deadlock., Missouri State came back into the game and the proceedings were poised for an exciting last 20 minutes
  • Exciting, they were. Matzleveich's goal in the 84th minute was a beautiful counter that saw the Terps work the ball down the pitch in five passes. Lowell rolled the ball to Richardson, who floated it to a streaking Matzelevich just before the halfway line. The Terps' captain worked the ball down to Justin Gielen, who helped it up well and released Richardson down the left flank. Richardson then played a picture perfect pass with the outside of his right foot to the back post and Matzelevich nodded it home to make it 1-0.
  • Missouri State came back and poured on the pressure. Roca was able to get free in the box and fire a right-footed shot past Lowell to tie it with 4:30 left. In the 90th minute, Roca was able to beat St. Martin to a long ball and finish past Lowell again to give Missouri State the lead with 35 seconds left.
  • Maryland had a chance in the dying moments. A ball was spilled by the Bears' keeper into the path of Justin Harris, who skied the ball over and open goalmouth with just 15 seconds left.
From The Boss
"I'm gutted for all of our players. We battled with a lot of pride and had an opportunity to steal this game. Missouri State is an outstanding team and we did everything we needed to do to win the game. We were just sloppy at the end. The last five minutes we didn't defend very well. but I'm very proud of this team. We had a chance to score in the last minute and we just didn't execute it. We put in a valliant effort against a very good and mature Missouri State team. The good news is preseason starts in less than three months." - Sasho Cirovski

From The Boys
"[The performance] was good. It was gritty. We put in a lot of work. It was a gritty and tough performance." - Paul Bin
