ORLANDO, Fla. - Sophomore
Ayana Akli fell to Anna Rogers of NC State in three sets (2-6, 6-4, 4-6) on Monday. Akli's appearance in the second round of the NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Championship matches a program best, previously set in 2011.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1
- Akli was first on the board and up 1-0, until Rogers answered back to tie things and eventually give herself a 5-1 lead
- The Terp tallied another game against Rogers, but eventually lost the set 2-6
SET 2
- Akli and Rogers battled it out in the second set, tying things up four times throughout
- After bringing the set to 4-4, Akli took charge and finshed victorious taking the next two games to put herself on top 6-4 and force a third
SET 3
- Rogers was first to get things going in the third, starting off by taking the first two sets against Akli
- Akli answered back to bring things within one, but Rogers continued her momentum and took the next the next two games
- The Terp returned the favor, taking two games of her own to bring the score to 3-4, just behind Rogers
- Rogers then took the next, followed by Akli taking the proceeding game to bring things to 5-4
- The pair faced a deciding point in the potential for Akli to tie things up, but Rogers took the game and match with a 6-4 victory
Akli finishes the season 15-4 and ranked No. 46 in the nation.
