COLLEGE PARK, Md. - University of Maryland Athletics earned multiple national honors from the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA), the organization announced Thursday.
Maryland was named one of two Finalists, along with Ole Miss for National Marketing Team of the Year as Texas collected the top honor. The Terrapins were named the Marketing Team of the Year in 2020 and in 2015 to become only the second school to win the national championship of marketing on two different occasions.
"I'm incredibly proud of our team's efforts this past year, in spite of the challenges, and I'm grateful that NACMA chose to recognize those efforts," said Assistant Athletic Director of Marketing Strategy & Fan Experience Jordan Looby. "Our marketing team is lucky to be surrounded by an incredible group of colleagues, all of whom are essential to making things like this possible. This honor is theirs just as much as it is ours."
Maryland's entry which received Finalist accolades focused on its edgy social media graphics; its Racial Justice Campaign; the launch of Terrapin Club+, an online streaming platform for Terrapin Club members; and the VoTERP campaign to raise awareness about voting in last November's election.
Maryland collected Gold in the category of Single Game Campaign and earned a Bronze for Virtual or In-Venue Student Promotion for the College GameDay festivities as part of the men's basketball game against Michigan State on Feb. 29, 2020.
The show featured a jaw dropping choreographed light show to the song "Mayhem" and it was just that: absolute mayhem. The next segment showcased one of our most beloved Terp albums, Scott Van Pelt, leading the charge for our famous Maryland "Flag Drop" unfurling from the top of The Wall. For the next segment, Maryland invited F.L.Y., the artists of the popular song "Swag Surfin'" to the court to lead the fans in the Swag Surfin' dance. Their performance had every fan out of their seats dancing.
The day drew acclaim from ESPN's biggest names: "This is one of the best environments we've ever had. This is fantastic," said Jay Bilas. "When you have an opening the way we had that opening with the light show, this is unreal," said LaPhonso Ellis.
Maryland earned Bronze in the category of Multi-Platform Branding Campaign for its Racial Justice Campaign. The goal of the Racial Justice Campaign was to use Maryland Athletics platform to center the fight for racial justice nationally, in the region, and within the University of Maryland community. We aimed to raise the voices of those involved in this fight, and raise awareness about the need for progress.
Maryland's marketing strategy and fan experience department is directed by Looby, and also included Kassidy Brown, Jacob Nicely, Rachel Palmer, and Tori Gray along with graphic design, social media and creative team members Jake Rose and Andrew Wray. Maryland's strategic communications and media relations unit is led by Jason Yellin with team members Dustin Semonavick, Sean Ellenby, Rose DiPaula, Taylor Smyth, Patrick Fischer, Ben Kessler, Keith Sneddon, Hunter Dortenzo, Madison Kyler and Joanna Levantis. The broadcasting and production team is led by Mike Farrell and included Josh Clayton, Tony Price, Jarred Belman, Haley Timple, Alex Gross, Thomas Mason, Jonah Haas and John Bartman.
