COLLEGE PARK, Md. - University of Maryland Athletics programs continued their outstanding performances in the classroom in the Spring 2021 semester. Maryland's student-athletes combined to record a 3.338 grade point average during the semester. The overall cumulative department GPA has risen to a department record GPA of 3.242, the 10th consecutive semester that saw the overall cumulative GPA above a 3.0.
Maryland celebrated 102 student-athlete graduates this spring and summer.
It was a standout semester as 60 student-athletes posted a perfect 4.0 GPA and 132 earned Dean's List recognition. Overall, 397 student-athletes achieved Scholar-Athlete status for posting a 3.0 or better GPA.
"Congratulations to our student-athletes for another outstanding semester in the classroom," said Athletic Director Damon Evans. "Our Terps continue to rise up in the face of challenges and perform at record levels. We continue to be inspired by their dedication to their studies while competing with their athletic programs. Our GSAC staff is to be commended and celebrated as well for their commitment to education and fostering the consummate student experience. This is a time to celebrate our student-athletes, we are so proud of them."
"When we learned 19 teams would compete during the spring semester, our Gossett Student-Athlete Center (GSAC) staff worked proactively to identify potential challenges to academic achievement," said Associate Athletic Director and Director of the Gossett Student-Athlete Center
Brady Rourke. "We prepared for a continuation of hybrid academic support services (virtual and in-person), which would work within the testing, travel, and competition schedules of student-athletes.
"The academic success of our student-athletes this spring affirms their focus and dedication to academic excellence. Student-athletes successfully balanced a variety of responsibilities and remained committed to academic progress and graduation. On behalf of our GSAC team, we congratulate and commend all involved, as we celebrate another semester of academic honors. Moreover, the tireless work of our GSAC staff, responsiveness to change, and dedication to student success was exemplary spring term. Our student-athletes and staff continue to inspire pride!"
There were 17 programs posting a semester GPA of greater than 3.0 led by the gymnastics' team with a 3.700 GPA. Fifteen programs now have a cumulative GPA of greater than 3.0, led by the field hockey team with a 3.504 GPA.
The football program had 68 members of the Honor Roll while the men's lacrosse team had 44 Honor Roll members. Women's track and field had a department-high 20 members of the Dean's List and 10 team members posted a perfect 4.0.
Seven programs had double-figure members of the Dean's List led by women's track and field along with football (12), gymnastics (12), women's lacrosse (12), softball (11), women's soccer (10), and men's lacrosse (10). Seven programs had at least 20 team members on the honor roll, led by football along with men's lacrosse (44), women's track and field (39), women's lacrosse (35), women's soccer (26), softball (23) and baseball (22).
