GREENVILLE, N.C. -- #24 Maryland suffered a 9-6 defeat to #13 East Carolina as the Terps' 2021 season came to an end in the NCAA Tournament on Sunday night at ECU's Clark-LeClair Stadium. The Terps (30-18) and Pirates (44-15) battled late into the night following a rainstorm that delayed the start of the game for more than two hours. The game finished at 12:56 a.m. ET on Monday morning as the game lasted 4:20. East Carolina won its sixth NCAA Regional and will play the winner of the Vanderbilt-Georgia Tech matchup next weekend.
Matthew Shaw smacked a pair of home runs in his first two at bats and finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Maxwell Costes boomed his third home run of the weekend -- in the eighth inning, as Maryland attempted to rally -- as he went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Troy Schreffler Jr. went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs while Randy Bednar went 2-for-4.
The game featured runs in the first five innings with East Carolina scoring in each of the first four frames. The game settled down from there with no runs scored in the sixth or seventh before the teams combined for five runs in the eighth.
The teams combined to use 11 pitchers, six Pirates and five Terrapins. Each team's staff threw more than 200 pitches.
