Lizzie Colson Named Honda Award Finalist

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Defender Lizzie Colson of the Maryland women's lacrosse team was named as one of four finalists for the Honda Sport Award Monday.
Colson solidified herself as the best defender in America in 2021, leading the nation with 49 turnovers, the second most in program history, and standing third in the country with 59 groundballs while serving as a team captain for a Maryland team that made their 31st consecutive NCAA Tournament.
The unanimous Big Ten Defender of the Year, this is the latest honor in a long list of accolades this year for Colson. The redshirt senior was a Tewaaraton Finalist, an IWLCA First Team All-Region honoree, an Inside Lacrosse First Team All-American, a First Team All-Big Ten selection, a Big Ten All-Tournament Team selection, a three-time Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week and two-time National Player of the Week.
Colson wrapped up her illustrious career as a Terp in 2021 with 106 career caused turnovers, the fourth most in program history, 324 draw controls, the third most in program history and 159 groundballs. The Manchester, Md. native helped lead Maryland to two National Championships (2017 & 2019), five Big Ten Championships (2017 2x, 2018 2x, 2019) and three Final Fours (2017-19).
Maryland has won the Honda Award eight times. Megan Taylor most recently won the award in 2019, Zoe Stukenberg won in 2017, while Taylor Cummings won three years in a row from 2014-16. Current assistant coach Caitlyn Phipps earned the award in 2010. Jen Adams was Maryland's first recipient of the Honda Award, winning it in 2000 and 2001.
Ally Kennedy (Stony Brook), Taylor Moreno (North Carolina) and Charlotte North (Boston College) were also named finalists.
The Honda Sport Award has been presented annually by the CWSA for the past 45 years to the top women athletes in 12 NCAA- sanctioned sports and signifies "the best of the best in collegiate athletics". The winner of the sport award becomes a finalist for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and the prestigious 2021 Honda Cup which will be presented on a telecast on CBS Sports Network, on June 28th, at 9 pm ET.
The lacrosse finalists were chosen by a panel of coaches and experts representing the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA). The Honda Sport award winner for lacrosse will be announced next week after voting by administrators from over 1,000 NCAA member schools. Each NCAA member institution has a vote.
