WEEKEND STORYLINES
Fresh faces
- In only their first weekend of action with the Terps, many of the five freshmen and four transfers made their marks for the team. Defensively Maryland was led by freshman Libero Milan Gomillion, who started all three matches and racked up 50 digs. The Bowie native also added two service aces.
- Elsewhere Erin Engel made her impact felt from the service line as her first career ace ended the set against Hofstra on Saturday night. Fellow setter Zoe Huang also contributed two serves over the weekend.
- Erin Morrissey notched the Terps first kill of the season on Friday night.
Terrific Transfers
- The transfers also showed off in their first weekend representing the university.
- Jumping right into action, outside hitter Paula Neciporuka tallied 27 kills across the ten sets, good for second on the team. Defensively Kaylee Thomas showed why she has over 1,000 career digs as she added 15 digs.
- Middle blocker Hannah Thompson also added five kills in her first four sets as a Terp. Lexi Kohut, a recent addition to the roster, has yet to compete for the Terps but has already made her impact felt within the program as a leader.
Blocking Blitz
- After leading the Big Ten with 3.35 blocks per set last season the Terps picked up right where they left off at the Maryland Invite. Senior middle blocker Rainelle Jones once again paced the squad with 19 total blocks.
- Right behind her are Cara Lewis and Laila Ricks who are tied with 14 total blocks apiece.
- In total the Terps already have 33.5 total blocks this season while their opponents only have 17.
SCOUTING THE FOES
- The weekend begins with a neutral site meeting between LIU and Maryland, the fifth meeting between the two programs after Maryland swept the last meeting in 2013. LIU is currently 0-3 after its first weekend of action.
- Friday's nightcap is the Terps lone true away match of the weekend as they face the Owls of Temple. The two programs have battled 31 times in history with Maryland winning 20 of those meetings including the most recent three-set sweep in 2018. Temple is currently 1-3 after reaching the AAC Championship Finals last season.
- Saturday's lone match features the Terps and the Gaels meeting for the first time in program history. Iona comes into the weekend 1-2 after winning their season opener.
