No. 8 Maryland Shuts Out High Point, 2-0

COLLEGE PARK, MD – No. 8 Maryland was dominant on both sides of the ball as they took down High Point, 2-0 to move to 6-1 overall.

The Terps spent the entire first half methodically trying to break down the Panthers' defense with quick passes from side to side, looking to find a proper opening for a scoring chance. Shots from Joshua Bolma and Brett St. Martin both required saves with the High Point struggling to gain any sustained possession. Maryland started to apply even more pressure as Hunter George fired a shot on goal that was saved as was Bolma's follow-up chance. Justin Gielen was the man who broke the scoreless tie as Brayan Padilla's shot ricocheted off of a High Point defender landed right on the right foot of Gielen who calmly put it behind the goalie.

The second half was much more favorable to the Panthers (2-4) in terms of generating offense but they still couldn't consistently get behind the stout Maryland defense. A tremendous save by goalie Jamie Lowell kept the Terps in front and that scare was enough to get the team to once again buckle down and take control. Maryland continued to hunt for a second goal and came close in the 76th minute when Bolma turned his defender around and fired a shot that rung off of the crossbar. The Panthers continued to apply pressure but a misclear from their defense caused the ball to fall behind their own goalie to make it a 2-0 lead and ultimately a win for Maryland.

Super Subs
  • Both Padilla and Gielen came into the match at the 30th minute mark and quickly made their presence known.
  • The two teamed up for the first goal of the game as Padilla's strike was blocked but Gielen was well-placed and scored his second goal of the season.

Brick Wall
  • The quartet of Alex Nitzl, Chris Rindov, Brett St. Martin and William Kulvik were impenetrable all night as High Point couldn't maintain possession of the ball for more than a few seconds before it was taken away.
  • High Point had a shot between Neumann in the 78th minute but a heads up play by Rindov saw the Rockville native boot the ball off the line, preserving the lead.
  • Goalie Jamie Lowell was once again very sure-handed in goal as while he only needed to make one save, he also managed to clear the ball away at any possible dangerous moment.
  • Lowell exited the game in the 66th minute and was replaced by Niklas Neumann who made one save and finished off the third shutout of the season for Maryland.
