No. 9 Maryland Blows Out Indiana, 8-2
9/24/2021 12:48:00 PM | Field Hockey
After conceding an early goal to Indiana (5-4, 0-2) and struggling to maintain possession, Maryland finally began to find its footing as a great pass from Anna Castaldo to Kyler Greenwalt knotted the game at one apiece. Momentum was now on the Terps' side as a breakaway by Hope Rose caused the defender to fall, giving the freshman enough time to set her feet and fire a shot past the Hoosier goalie, giving the Terps their first lead of the game at 2-1 with just under 5:00 to play in the first quarter. The offense began to snowball for Maryland as just minutes later, Julianna Tornetta was the next to get a clean look at the goal with her shot finding the back of the net. Margot Lawn was the next Terp to get on the score sheet as the Terps took a commanding 4-1 lead into the second quarter. Maryland scored four goals in 5:05.
The momentum carried over into the second quarter as a miscue on an Indiana penalty corner gave the Terps a breakaway opportunity, where a tic-tac-toe passing play between Rose, Tornetta, and Taylor Mason gave Maryland a 5-1 lead. The Terps were able to control possession for the remaining of the second quarter as Indiana couldn't cross the midfield mark for more than just a few seconds.
Much like how they started the game, the Hoosiers scored just over a minute into the second half but Maryland kept pressuring the Hoosiers defense and forced them into a bad turnover where Bibi Donraadt made them pay. Donraadt's goal brought the lead back to a four goal difference and gave the Terps momentum once again. Maryland once again suffocated the Indiana defense, forced another turnover, which led to a Greenwalt shot. The save was made, but the rebound bounced to Castaldo, who put it in the net to make it 7-2.
The Terps weren't settled with their offensive production as Emma DeBerdine made a big interception, then ran towards the goal which caused the Hoosier goalie to come off her line. DeBerdine then calmly passed over to a breaking Rose who netted her second goal of the game. The six-goal was lead was enough as Maryland cruised for the final 14 minutes of the game en route to an 8-2 win.
