GAME 6Â STORYLINES
REWRITING THE RECORD BOOKS
- QB Taulia Tagovailoa has established himself as one of the top quarterbacks in the country, currently top-25 in the nation in completion percentage (75.5), completions per game (24), passing yards (1,416) and total offense (301.6), leading the Big Ten in that category. Tagovailoa currently has the fifth-best single season completion percentage in FBS history.
- Tagovailoa had a record-setting day in last week's win over Michigan State, first becoming the fastest Maryland quarterback ever to eclipse the 6,000 career yard mark, then passing legendary QB Boomer Esiason (6,259Â from 1981-83) to move up to third all-time in program history in career yards (6,287) and then capping it off by finishing the game with his 10th career 300-yard passing game, tying Scott Milanovich for the most in program history.
- Tagovailoa has thrown for 3,327 yards in the 11 home games he's played for the Terrapins (302.4 yards per game). The only other Big Ten quarterback in the past 25 years to average more than 300.0 passing yards at home – with a minimum of 10 games - was Purdue's Drew Brees (314.2) from 1997-2000.
- In his third season as a Terp, Tagovailoa stands first in program lore in career completion percentage (69.3%) and career 300-yard passing games (10), and third in career passing touchdowns (41), career completions (523) and career passing yards (6,287).
defensive prowess
- The Terps have only allowed seven points in the third quarter this season, tied for the eight-lowest amount in the FBS this season (Air Force, Marshall & Minnesota: 0; Illinois, Michigan & Utah: 3; SMU: 6). The Terps have outscored opponents 27-7 in the third quarter this season.
- The Terps have had nine different players record at least one sack so far this season, tied for the fifth-most in the nation, only trailing Bowling Green (11), Cincinnati (11), Ole Miss (10) and Penn State (10). DL Henry Chibueze leads the way with two sacks, while LB Jaishawn Barham, DL Anthony Booker Jr., DB Beau Brade, DL Greg China-Rose, DL Quashon Fuller, DB Gavin Gibson, DL Taizse Johnson and DL Kellan Wyatt all have one.
- LB Jaishawn Barham has 29 tackles through four games this season, the fourth-most of any FBS freshman, only trailing Washington State's Jalen Hicks (35), FIU's Demetrius Hill (35) and South Carolina's Nick Emmanwori (34). Barham totaled 12 tackles (seven solo) against SMU, the most by a Maryland true freshman since long-time NFL linebacker D'Qwell Jackson also had 12 (10 solo) on August 31, 2002 vs. Notre Dame.
going streaking
- RB Antwain Littleton II has scored a touchdown in six-straight games dating back to last year's New Era Pinstripe Bowl, the longest streak by a Terrapin since RB Lance Ball scored in six-straight games in 2005-06 (last three games of 2005 and first three games of 2006).
- The redshirt freshman's rushing touchdown streak is the longest active streak in the country.
- Littleton II now has six rushing touchdowns in Maryland's first five games this season. Only two other Terrapins have done that in the last 15 seasons (since 2008) - Anthony McFarland Jr. (7 in 2019) and C.J. Brown (6 in 2013).
just for kicks
- K Chad Ryland set the Big Ten record for most consecutive made field goals with a 43-yarder in the third quarter of the win against Michigan State. The senior tied Maryland's Brad Craddock (2013-14) and Ohio State's Mike Nugent (2001-02) as part of a streak which spanned 14 games between October 2, 2021 and October 1, 2022.
- Â The Eastern Michigan transfer, who made 56-of-74 kicks as a Eagle, is seven-for-eight in 2022 to start his Terrapin career, the second-best field goal percentage in the Big Ten (Charles Campbell, Indiana).
- At No. 4 Michigan (9/24), Ryland made a 52 and 53 yard field goal, the first Maryland kicker to have two 50-plus yard makes in a single game in program history and the first to record two field goals of 45-yards or more since Brad Craddock did so at Indiana on September 27, 2014. Ryland is also the first Big Ten kicker to accomplish this feat since Emmitt Carpenter of Minnesota had two in 2016 against Purdue (11/5).
- Ryland hit a 51-yarder this past week against Michigan State to give him three 50-plus yard makes on the season, already tied for the most in program history (Nick Novak, 2002). The senior's 53-yarder at #4 Michigan was the fourth-longest in program history and his 52-yarder was tied for the fifth-longest in Terrapin lore. Through only five games this season Ryland has three-of-the-13 longest field goals in program history. Ryland has the most 50-plus yard makes in the country, tied with Missouri's Harrison Mevis.
high powered offense
- The Terps are currently ninth in the nation and second in the Big Ten, only trailing No. 3 Ohio State in yards per play, averaging 7.16. Maryland has 2,383 total yards (1,513 passing & 870 rushing) on 333 plays and has averaged at least 4.9 yards per play in each game this season. As an offense, Maryland currently leads the nation with a 75% team completion percentage, stands top-10 in fourth down conversion percentage (80%) and top-25 in red zone offense (94.4%), passing offense (302.6), total offense (476.6) and team passing efficiency (163.4).
- RB Roman Hemby stands 15th in the nation in yards per carry, averaging 6.47 yards per rush through five games. As a team, Maryland has four rushes of at least 50 yards this season (two by Hemby, two by Antwain Littleton II). The Terps are tied for the third-most runs of 50+ yards by any team in the FBS this season (Alabama, 6 & Kansas State, 5).
- Maryland has scored at least 27 points in each of its last seven games dating back to last season against Rutgers, tying the longest such streak in program history, a run of seven-straight in the final seven games of the 1984 season. If the Terps score at least 27 points this week, it will be the longest streak of games with 27-plus points in program history.
