No. 20 Terps Drop Big Ten Opener, 90-67, To Nebraska

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- No. 20 Maryland fell in its Big Ten opener to Nebraska, 90-67, after an offensive explosion in the final 14 minutes from the Cornhuskers.

Shyanne Sellers led Maryland with a career-high 21 points and a team-high eight boards. For the second consecutive game, Sellers was the Terps' leading scorer in the first quarter. Brinae Alexander was big for the Terps yet again, knocking down a trio of three-pointers for 14 total points. Diamond Miller notched 13 points, all in the second half, to round out the top scorers for the Terps. Miller picked up two early fouls and, subsequently, was held to just six first half minutes.

After the Terps had led for about 13 straight minutes of game action, Nebraska took the lead for good with 2:21 left in the third quarter as the Terps were not able to come up with enough stops to mount a comeback.

The Terps are now 7-3 overall while Nebraska improved to 6-3. Nebraska was led by 29 points from Jaz Shelley.

Brenda's Take

"Obviously a lot of disappointment in our locker room, and rightfully so. We knew how good Nebraska is and they obviously showed it. We knew they were going to come in hungry after their disappointment in their loss to Virginia Tech. I thought they exposed us in every way possible. We obviously knew they could shoot the three and I thought they had a great gameplan to drive and kick and rebound, it was really, really impressive. The second half was obviously pretty disappointing. Fatigue obviously played a factor in this game, but it isn't the reason why we lost…Obviously, there are areas for us to be able to learn in. I think we're disappointed in our defense, we weren't able to bring that. You can have tired legs and not be able to shoot the basketball on offense, but the defensive side is probably the most disappointing."

Breaking Down The Action
  • The two sides traded buckets throughout the first quarter and were deadlocked at 16 apiece at the end. Sellers scored half of Maryland's points on 3-of-3 shooting from the field.
  • Sparked by a 13-0 run in the middle of the second quarter featuring two big triples from Alexander, the Terps went into halftime leading 36-31. Maryland shot 45 percent from the field in the half and held a 14-0 advantage in second chance points. Sellers and Alexander combined for 25 of the 36 points.
  • Despite nine points in the third stanza from Miller, who was held scoreless in the first half, Nebraska fought back to go up 60-56 lead heading into the final ten minutes behind seven straight made field goals.
