HOUSTON, TX – The Maryland women's golf team finished in a two-way for 10th at the ICON Invitational (Feb. 21-22) at their second stop of the spring season. Sophomore Patricie Mackova led the way for the Terrapins, who finished in a six-way tie for 16th (-2) - - 75-73-66.
"Patricie battled through a couple of tough rounds and showed tremendous resilience en route to a bogey-free 66 (-6) in the final round," said head coach Kelly Hovland. "It was a flawless round of golf on a tough golf course, and she stepped up big time to keep us in the mix on the leaderboard."
Players teed it up over the two-day event at the par-72 Golf Club of Houston - Tournament Course playing at nearly 6,300-yards. The venue hosts the Houston Open on the PGA TOUR.
The Team
-Junior Maria Vittoria Corbi finished in a five-way tie for 36th (+4) - - (73-74-73)
-Freshman Panassaya Somchit finished in a six-way tie for 43rd (+6) - - (74-75-7)
-Sophomore Karla Elena Vázquez Setzer finished in a four-way tie for 48th (+7) - - (68-76-79)
"Karla's 68 (-4) led the way in the first round and got us off to a great start. She is an exciting player to coach and continues to be an impact player as a sophomore," said coach Hovland. "She is only going to keep getting better."
Vázquez Setzer's first-round 68 (-4) ties her career-low set earlier in the fall 2021 season. (Second round of the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship - 9/21/22)
-Senior Elena Verticchio finished in a two-way tie for 70th (+14) - - (82-73-75)
From the Coaches Eye - Hovland's Analysis
"This was a big weekend for our confidence and answers a lot of questions about how we stack up against the best school in the country, and we battled them for 54 holes," said coach Hovland. "Beating a top 20 team (going into the week - TCU), tying defending Big Ten champions (Michigan State), and finishing right behind the defending national champions (Ole Miss) is only going to give us momentum for the next event and the rest of the spring."
