BUIES CREEK, NC – The No. 22 Maryland baseball team won its fifth straight game to open the season, downing the Campbell Camels 3-0 on Friday evening at Jim Perry Stadium. Maryland has now equaled its best start in program history, going 5-0 for the first time since 1968.
The Terps were led on Friday night by Nick Dean, who threw another gem, going seven innings of three-hit ball while striking out seven Camels. That came on the heels of a seven-inning, one-hit performance to open the season at Baylor last Friday.
In the eighth inning, Sean Heine came into the game in relief with two men already on base and no-outs, and after Luke Shliger caught a runner stealing, Heine struck out Bryce Arnold and Ty Babin with the bases loaded preserving the 1-0 lead for the Terps.
Maryland struck early in the top of the first inning, scoring on a walk and stolen base by Chris Alleyne, who was later brought home on a sacrifice fly by Matt Shaw.
Nick Lorusso drove in two runs in the ninth inning with a bases-loaded single, giving the Terps some much-needed insurance.
