Sterling Holds Ohio State Scoreless In Second Half, Leading Terps To 14-8 Victory

COLUMBUS, OH — The No. 8 Maryland women's lacrosse team held Ohio State scoreless in the second half, ending the game on a 7-0 run to defeat the Buckeyes, 14-8, on Sunday afternoon.
Emily Sterling led the defensive effort that held Ohio State to only four shots and zero goals in the second half. Sterling ended the game on a six save run without allowing a goal over the last 35 minutes of play.
"Good win for us," said head coach Cathy Reese. "We came out from halftime and just did a tremendous job in the second half. We played really well defensively and set Emily (Sterling) up for success and came up with the draw controls that we needed to control possession. We're happy to leave Columbus with a win."
In a third quarter stalemate, with neither team scoring for the first 13 minutes, Shaylan Ahearn put home a free position shot to give Maryland a 9-8 lead. Just 30 seconds later Aurora Cordingley also scored a free position to give the Terps a 10-8 lead through three quarters. Maryland would not allow a shot in the fourth quarter and outscore the Buckeyes 10-8, led by two goals and an assist from Grace Griffin.
Maryland won its fifth game in a row with a 14-8 win over the Buckeyes at Ohio Stadium on Easter Sunday. The Terps improved to 13-1 (4-0 Big Ten), while the Buckeyes dropped to 9-5 (2-2 Big Ten).
Sterling made nine saves for the Terps. Aurora Cordingley led the offense with four goals and three assists, including the 100th assist of her career, and Hannah Leubecker also recorded a hat trick. Six different Terps scored, five of whom had multi-goal games.

Breaking Down The Action
- After Libby May and Eloise Clevenger scored early, Ohio State netted four straight. Maryland ended the first quarter on a 3-0 run.
- Early in the second quarter, goals from Hannah Leubecker and Shaylan Ahearn pushed the Terps ahead, 7-5. The Buckeyes went on a 3-0 run over a 90-second span to recapture the lead, and Aurora Cordingley scored her second goal of the day with 32 seconds left in the half to send them to halftime tied at eight.
- After Ahearn's goal with 1:37 left in the third quarter, Cordingley collected a free position goal of her own less than a minute later.
- Fourth-quarter goals from Cordingley, Leubecker, and two from Grace Griffin powered the Terps to their 14-8 victory over Ohio State.
- Cordingley scored seven points for the second straight game.
- It was the eighth time this season that the Johns Hopkins transfer scored more than four goals.
- Maryland is back in action on Saturday, April 23, for a top-10 showdown at home against No. 3 Northwestern.
