Eight Terps Open WNBA Season

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- The Maryland women's basketball program has a long tradition of helping student-athletes prepare for the next level. Currently, eight Terrapin alums are on WNBA rosters. Eighteen Terps have been drafted into the league since its inception in 1997.

Here is an update on our Pro Terps around the WNBA:

KATIE BENZAN (Washington Mystics)
Terrapin sharpshooter accepted an invitation to the Mystics' training camp on April 20. Two weeks later, she was named to the squad's opening night roster. Benzan made her WNBA debut on May 8 vs. the Minnesota Lynx. She notched an assist. Benzan is also the first Dominican player to play in the WNBA.

KAILA CHARLES (New York Liberty)
Charles was drafted by the Connecticut Sun, where she spent the last two seasons. She averaged 4.7 points per game in 51 games played. Charles was waived by the Sun on May 2, then was signed by the Liberty on May 6.

TIANNA HAWKINS (Washington Mystics)
Now in her ninth season in the WNBA, Hawkins is back home with the Washington Mystics. In her first game this season, she posted 7 points, 3 rebounds in 17 minutes vs. the Indiana Fever. 

BRIONNA JONES (Connecticut Sun)
Brionna Jones is in her sixth season in the league, all with the Sun. In Connecticut's opener, she scored 11 points with 5 rebounds and 3 blocks. Jones was named the league's Most Improved Player in 2021 and was named to the 2021 WNBA All Star Game.

STEPHANIE JONES (Washington Mystics)
Stephanie Jones is in her second season in the WNBA. Jones spent the 2021 season with the Connecticut Sun. She was waived by the Sun on May 4, then picked up by the Mystics on May 6. She saw time in 18 games last season. 

ALYSSA THOMAS (Connecticut Sun)
Alyssa Thomas is in her ninth season with the Sun, although she missed most of the 2021 season with a ruptured achilles. She made it back for the Sun's Playoffs run. She scored 25 points with 7 boards in the Sun's opener vs. the New York Liberty on May 7.

KRISTI TOLIVER (Los Angeles Sparks)
The two-time All-Star and two-time WNBA Champion will join the Sparks once her coaching duties with the Dallas Mavericks end.
