COLLEGE PARK, MD – University of Maryland women's lacrosse head coach
Cathy Reese announced the addition of All-American defender Marge Donovan to the program for the 2023 season.
Â
Donovan, a Catonsville, MD native who played high school lacrosse for McDonogh, comes to Maryland from Princeton where she played five seasons.Â
Â
"We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Marge into our program for 2023," said Reese. "She is an incredible defender that we have admired for years while watching and facing her at Princeton. We know she will fit in seamlessly on our defense and help us accomplish big things next season."Â
Â
The graduate student was named the Ivy League Defender of the Year, a Third Team IWLCA All-American, a First-Team All-Ivy selection and the Ivy League Tournament Most Outstanding Player in 2022 as she graduated as Princeton's all-time leader in career draw controls (214) and draws in a season (112 in 2022).Â
Â
A captain of the 2022 Tigers team, Donovan tallied 112 draw controls to set the program record, caused 32 turnovers and recorded 25 groundballs to go with two goals and three assists. Donovan helped lead Princeton to an Ivy League Championship and berth in the NCAA Second Round.
Â
Donovan is a three-time All-Ivy selection, 2022 Tewaaraton Watch List selection, 2019 Honorable Mention All-American and 2018 Inside Lacrosse All-Rookie Team honoree.Â
Â
The defender played in 63 games with 61 starts and has totaled 214 draw controls, 122 groundballs and 83 caused turnovers with two goals and three assists.Â
Donovan also is a member of Team USA and competed for the National Team in the World Game Sixes this past month where she earned a Silver Medal.Â
Â
Donovan joins a lineage of great Maryland defenders, including
Abby Bosco who also transferred from the Ivy League (Penn) last season and went on to be named the Big Ten Defender of the Year. Maryland has won the Big Ten Defender of the Year award in each season they've been in the league and has won eight National Defender of the Year honors in the last 12 years, most recently Team USA member
Lizzie Colson in 2021.Â
