No. 4 Terps Dominate Drexel 7-1, Win 26th Straight Season Opener

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- The No. 4 Terps used a big second quarter to propel them to a 7-1 win over Drexel at the Maryland Field Hockey and Women's Lacrosse Complex for the program's 26th consecutive season-opening victory.

The Terps, ranked No. 4 in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Preseason Poll, were boosted by a pair of goals apiece from Hope Rose and Sophie Klautz. Maryland also put on a strong defensive performance, not allowing the Dragons to put a shot on goal for the entire first half.

Breaking Down The Action
  • The Terps dominated time of possession in the first quarter but were unable to score.
  • Senior captain Emma DeBerdine broke the scoring drought in the second quarter off a penalty corner, with the assist by Rose.
  • Less than two minutes later, Rose added a goal of her own, flicking the ball from the right side into the top left corner.
  • Klautz added her first goal in the second quarter and the second one early into the third.
  • Rose scored her second in the third quarter and Margot Lawn added another shortly after.
  • The Dragons scored their one goal in the final quarter.
Fresh Faces Fitting In
  • Klautz, making her collegiate debut, started and scored two goals.
  • Graduate students Danielle Van Rootselaar (Brown) and Leah Crouse (Duke) both started in their Terp debuts. Van Rootselaar scored her first goal in a Maryland uniform.

  • This ties the largest margin of victory in a season opener for the Terps since beating New Hampshire 8-0 in 2003, tying the 2006 6-0 opening win over Pacific.
